How-To Make Your Own Facewash Using All-Natural Oils And Manuka Honey
Despite what you see on social media, my skin is far from perfect. In fact, I’ve had consistent adult acne for about 3 years now and it’s proven itself to be much deeper than just skin-deep. While I’m working on fixing this issue internally, I am confident to say I’ve found a routine that works – on the surface – to reduce active acne and the inflammation that comes along with it.
I had perfectly clear skin all throughout high school while surviving on a diet of everything I avoid today: processed foods, gluten, diary, and meat. It didn’t matter if I forgot to wash my makeup off at night or only got 4 hours of sleep; my skin remained flawless. I thought I’d be blessed forever, but I was wrong, and at the age of 23 my skin started to rebel. It started off fairly innocent; a few small pimples here and there I thought I could control with a diligent routine and a clean pillowcase. When cleanser after cleanser failed me, I started to panic. I took it upon myself to do research and I began taking supplements known to help acne, which did absolutely nothing.
Fast forward a few years later and I still don’t have the equation for perfect skin. I’m currently seeing a naturopath, as I believe my hormones are primarily to blame after years of being on and off birth control. However, I’ve locked down a pretty legit skincare routine that is both gentle on irritation yet effective at keeping acne at bay.
I’ve tried every cleanser under the sun and nothing really worked as it was suppose to. It took me a while to find out that my face doesn’t like to be washed at all (with water, that is). I have been using a micellar cleansing water for couple years now and this has helped my skin immensely. The brand I use is Bioderma and I don’t think I’ll never stray – unless I find a more natural alternative. On the other hand, my face wash is completely natural and that’s because I make it myself!
I’ve tried the oiling cleansing method with great success so I knew my skin was OK with oils. I then did a little research into what oils would be beneficial for controlling breakouts, soothing redness, and at the same time moisturizing.
The recipe you’ll find below does all this PLUS it lathers like a dream and I know how hard it is to give up that lather when you’re looking for a really deep clean. Combine all these ingredients in a glass jar (preferably one that has a pump lid), shake before use, and you’re good to go! I use this cleanser to ‘double cleanse‘ after my micellar water on the days I choose to wear makeup, which is about 2-3x times a week.
- ½ cup filtered water
- ¼ cup lquid castile soap (I use Dr. Bronners)
- 5 teaspoons Jojoba oil
- 2 tbsp of Manuka honey
- 1 tsp Tea Tree Oil
- 15 drops for Lavendar Oil
- 10 drops Rosemary Oil
As for a little background information on the ingredients: Manuka honey is amazing for acne prone skin. It reduces redness and heals inflamed skin while drawing out bacteria with its anti-bacterial properties. Tea tree and Rosemary also have strong anti-bacterial and anti-fugal properties. Lavendar works to soothe redness while Jojoba oil provides moisture.
Keep in mind you should never put essential oils on your skin without a carrier oil (Jojoba in this case) and it’s important to do a patch test before using anything containing oils. Tea tree can be quite drying (one of the reasons it is good for oily skin) so you may need to readjust the formula if you’re finding it too harsh, that’s the beauty of making your own products; you can alter the recipe to whatever suits your skin best!
